What is insomnia and how can it be treated?

Insomnia is a 24 hour condition which erodes one’s ability to lead a fulfilling life. Most people live with insomnia for an average of ten years before seeking help. I recognize how bad things must be for you to be here. Despite the complexity of the initial cause of insomnia and its impact on your life, I offer a brief but highly effective treatment. It will demand a lot from you, but if you are determined for things to change I am here to help.

Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the first line treatment recommended by the NHS and NICE. While CBT-I elements target the unhelpful behaviours and beliefs which perpetuate your difficulties with sleep, EMDR targets the accumulated memories of, and associated with, insomnia to treat the anxiety and dread you have about going to sleep.

Whether your insomnia stops you from falling asleep, wakes you in the middle of the night or early hours of the morning, or prevents you from feeling rested and restored, I am able to support you to get the sleep you need. Please get in touch to learn more about how I can help in an average of four sessions.

The CBT-I programme consists usually of four sessions, with an extended initial assessment session. If your insomnia is connected to other difficulties such as depression, anxiety, or PTSD, we can tailor therapy to also treat these issues. You can expect us to make immediate changes to your behavior and beliefs around sleep to improve your insomnia from the first session.

How do I know if I have insomnia?

‘I can’t sleep at night. Do I have insomnia?’

Sleeplessness can affect anyone and it can be a huge problem for your daily routine and quality of life.

According to the Sleep Health Foundation, as many as 1 in 3 adults have at least mild insomnia, and about one-quarter of those experience persistent symptoms. Although most people struggle occasionally with getting enough rest, chronic insomnia can be much more difficult to manage.

Take this QUIZ if you think insomnia could be the cause of your sleeplessness.

Sleep Restore Programme

Get the most out of the day by getting your best sleep at night with the Sleep Restore Programme, using cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (or CBT-I), the NHS and NICE recommended firstline treatment for insomnia.

  • Are you an adult, routinely struggling to fall asleep each night, even after a long, exhausting day?
  • Do you find yourself awake in the night, or waking too early in the morning, and unable to get back to sleep no matter how hard you try?
  • Do you worry about the thought of going to bed, uncertain and afraid of what each night will bring?
  • Maybe your career is suffering because you’re lacking motivation and concentration caused by poor sleep?
  • Are you worried that not sleeping is putting strain on your relationships?
  • Perhaps taking sleeping tablets is no longer working. You feel just as exhausted, not knowing which way to turn?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions, then you are likely suffering with insomnia disorder and the Sleep Restore Programme could help you to:

  • Feel more motivated with better energy levels
  • Improve your quality of sleep and feel well-rested
  • Fall asleep easily and sleep through the night
  • Feel relaxed about sleep with less sleep anxiety
  • Stop taking sleeping pills, even after long-term use.

CBT-I treatment consists of three main components –

  • Resetting your circadian rhythm and discovering your unique sleep needs including your ideal sleep duration and chronotype.
  • Unpairing the negative association you have developed between sleep and bed and conditioning you to connect bedtime with rest.
  • Exploring the beliefs you hold around sleep that may be contributing to your insomnia and developing different ways of thinking about sleep and strategies for calming your mind so that you are in a sufficiently restful state at night to fall asleep.

CBT-I usually works best when there are four treatment sessions of one hour every two weeks. Most clients see significant improvements to their sleep quality in weeks 2-5, and many experience improvement from the first session.

CBT-I is the most highly recommended treatment method for insomnia, with the largest research evidence base to support it. When applied to the problem of sleeplessness, CBTi focuses on developing habits and thought patterns that promote sleep. This is a clinically approved treatment method that doesn’t rely on sleeping pills and which is the gold standard recommended by the NHS and NICE.

Sleep Restore Plus

For most people, even with severe and enduring issues with insomnia lasting decades, the four session Sleep Restore Programme works.

However, for others, issues with insomnia go beyond the behaviours and thoughts which interfere with sleep and have deep roots in unresolved emotional difficulties and struggles. This can be due to adverse experiences, but can also be all the more bewildering for those who haven't necessarily experienced obvious ‘traumatic’ events, and who otherwise have a good life. In these situations, anxiety about sleep may have connections to more subtle internal or external conflicts.

Sleep Restore Plus resolves the emotional struggles that often lie at the heart of sleep disturbances, offering a more comprehensive and effective solution to achieving restful sleep. This is particularly helpful for people who have a history of or are currently experiencing depression, anxiety, or PTSD.

What does Sleep Restore Plus Consist of?

Each Sleep Restore Plus programme is a bespoke treatment package, developed with you following thorough assessment.

Typically, it involves 6-10 sessions of integrated EMDR therapy and systemic psychotherapy, in addition to the core framework of CBT-I. EMDR supports clients using the brain’s natural adaptive mechanisms to process painful and stuck memories which impact sleep. Systemic psychotherapy with individuals helps to make sense of and work through the influence of events in one’s family of origin and other relationships, and how this may influence poor sleep in the present.
